Sometimes called ADF for short, this approach to\nintermittent fasting allows you to fast on one day while eating roughly what\nyou want on the following day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dietdoctor.com\/authors\/dr-jason-fung-m-d\">Dr. Jason Fung<\/a> discusses alternate day\nfasting as well as other forms of intermittent fasting in his book, <em>The\nObesity Code: Unlocking the Secrets of Weight Loss<\/em>. In brief, he discusses\nhow insulin levels must be lowered in order to effectively lose weight.\nIntermittent fasting can take you there, though many people find success\nthrough the alternate day method because of its ease and flexibility. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20815899\/\">Studies<\/a> even back that up!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How ADF works<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following alternate day fasting is easy.\nYou fast one day and eat a sensible amount of calories the day after. Repeat.\nYou\u2019re only restricting your eating half the time, a much easier way to go through\nintermittent fasting. On your fasting days, you can drink all the calorie-free\ndrinks you want like water or coffee and tea that have no sweeteners or creams\nadded in. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Fung\u2019s modified suggestions of\nalternate day fasting allows you to eat 500 calories on the days you fast which\nis much more ideal that fully fasting on those fast days with the same\neffectiveness. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Science-based benefits for\nthis method<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Dr. Fung has a great case built for insulin\ngetting in the way of weight loss, his ideas are research-based and can promote\nplenty of benefits. Some key benefits of alternate day fasting and intermittent\nfasting follow below. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8211; Better weight loss<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Fung mentions that this type of fasting\nhelps regulate your insulin levels. When that happens, it enhances your body\u2019s\nability to breakdown fat. In the short-term, which is very ideal for these\ntypes of fasts, metabolic rates jumped up by nearly 14%. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8211; Reduces type 2 diabetes\nrisk<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More on that insulin which is central to\nDr. Fung\u2019s ideas, type 2 diabetes is a condition that is born from insulin\nresistance. Minimizing that resistance is the key to staying healthy and\navoiding complications. With ADF, it drastically reduces blood glucose levels\nall by simply restricting the times you\u2019re eating. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8211; Helps tame inflammation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As science mounts even more evidence that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5805548\/\">chronic inflammation<\/a> brings on serious health\nproblems like cancer, heart disease, and rheumatoid arthritis, it definitely\ncan\u2019t hurt to decrease the inflammation in your body. Dr. Fung cited a study\nwhere 50 healthy adults engaged in intermittent fasting for a month and had\nmajorly decreased levels of inflammation. The scientific studies currently cement Dr. Fung\u2019s theory that lowered insulin levels can help with weight loss as well as benefit the body in numerous ways.
