But too much of a good thing can lead to dangerous health problems\ndown the road. When it\u2019s perpetually too high, the tissues in your body don\u2019t respond\nto it properly leading to a condition known as insulin resistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Estimates in recent studies reveal that\nnearly half the US population have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5278808\/\">insulin resistance<\/a>. It tends to come with\nother conditions like obesity, pre-diabetes, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular\ndisease, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and hypertension, to name a few. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most people don\u2019t know they have it, and that\u2019s where the danger lies. It has also been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11502781\">linked<\/a> with some types of cancers, mental health disorders, and other troublesome conditions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What insulin should do<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When all things are running as they should\nin your body, insulin is helpful to keep your blood glucose levels in\nhomeostasis. It should never be too high or too low. As those glucose levels\nrise, your body sends in more insulin. It also regulates fat storage. High\ninsulin levels stimulate fat cells to use up glucose and make more fat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For insulin resistance to happen, there are\nmany factors that may be to blame. Sometimes it\u2019s genetic, other times it\u2019s\nenvironmental. Lifestyle factors are also a contributor. It\u2019s likely that\ngenetics may leave some people more prone than others, but no one can deny the\nrise of processed foods loaded with sugar, additives, and refined carbs. When\nthese things are broken down by your body, they create too much glucose that doesn\u2019t\nget used for energy and has nowhere to go. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dietdoctor.com\/authors\/dr-jason-fung-m-d\">Dr. Jason Fung<\/a> said it best when he\nlikened it to stuffing more clothing into a suitcase that is completely full.\nIt isn\u2019t resistant, but rather too full to fit anything else. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Symptoms to watch for with\ninsulin resistance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, you can\u2019t just check off a\nlist of symptoms for insulin resistance. However, one thing that should clue\nyou in is the increase of abdominal fat. Another thing will be your doctor\nalerting you if you have pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes. It\u2019s wise to make an\nappointment to be certain about the state of your health. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll likely feel fine in the early stages\nof insulin resistance. Left unchecked though, you may notice the symptoms of\ntype 2 diabetes becoming more prevalent. Urinating often, being excessively\nthirsty, feeling fatigued even when you haven\u2019t done anything strenuous, and\nexcessive hunger are all common clues. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Try a quick\nwaist-to-height test at home<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now is the time to take charge of your\nhealth with a low carb lifestyle that can eliminate your chances for insulin\nresistance. Before you embark on that healthy journey though, know your status.\nYou can measure your waist in relation to your height to get a general idea\nabout the state of your health in relation to insulin resistance and work with\nyour doctor accordingly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All you need to do is measure your waist by your height. You want a ratio of less than 0.5. If it\u2019s higher than that, you should be concerned. You can also use a simple string! Wrap it around your waist and then use it to measure your height. That string shouldn\u2019t be more than half of your height.
