What is the ketogenic (keto) diet?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The keto diet is an eating regimen that contains minimal\ncarbohydrates. The carb intake on the keto diet is typically less than 30 grams\nper day. This means you\u2019ll be consuming high amounts of heart-healthy fats and\nmodest amounts of quality protein sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you like bacon, steak, eggs, avocado, and cheese,&nbsp;among many other foods, then the keto diet is for you!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. What does the ketogenic diet do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The term \u2018ketogenic\u2019 refers to the process of your body (liver)\nproducing organic&nbsp;substances\nknown as ketones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you greatly limit your carb intake, your body needs to get\nits energy from another fuel source. In the case of the keto diet, your body\nstarts to utilize fats for energy since glucose is limited. As a result, your body becomes\n\u201cfat-adapted\u201d and relies primarily on a metabolic process called lipolysis for\nderiving energy from fats. When your body carries out lipolysis, ketones are\nmade by your liver (as a byproduct).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once ketones are made in high enough amounts, your body&nbsp;enters a state&nbsp;called nutritional ketosis. Being in ketosis\nhas a multitude of benefits for humans, especially for helping burn stored body\nfat for energy. This makes the keto diet ideal for those&nbsp;trying to lose weight.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. What foods am I allowed to eat on the\nketogenic diet?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s an abridged overview of what the best keto diet foods\nare:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>All non-starchy,&nbsp;low-carb vegetables<\/li><li>Whole nuts and seeds<\/li><li>Avocados<\/li><li>Butter, ghee, heavy\ncream, select low carb salad dressings<\/li><li>Whole eggs<\/li><li>Healthy food oils\n(olive oil, coconut oil, nut oils)<\/li><li>Freshwater fish<\/li><li>Condiments and sauces\n(as long as they contain minimal carbs)<\/li><li>Herbs and spices<\/li><li>Animal meats (turkey,\nchicken, beef, pork, organ meat, exotic game)<\/li><li>Water, club soda,\ncalorie-free sparkling water, unsweetened tea\/coffee<\/li><li>Full-fat, unprocessed\ncheeses (mozzarella, cheddar, gouda, bleu cheese)<\/li><li>Supplemental protein\npowders<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>4. What carbs sources are not permitted on the\nketo diet?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In general, you should not consume any of the following carb\nsources on the keto diet:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Bread<\/li><li>Flour<\/li><li>Products made with\nflour and or sugar<\/li><li>Grains (wheat, rice,\noats, barley)<\/li><li>Most fruit<\/li><li>Soft\ndrinks and fruit juices<\/li><li>Candy<\/li><li>Pasta<\/li><li>Added\nand refined sugars<\/li><li>Starchy vegetables\n(all types potatoes, corn, peas, carrots)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>5.
