Many people have heard of the Paleo diet as a way to get\nback to eating how humans ate when they first roamed the earth. But what is the\npurpose of this diet, who is it for, and what can you do to be successful?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is\nthe Paleo Diet?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Paleo diet, short for Paleolithic diet, is\nbased on what human hunter-gatherers ate before modern civilizations started\nmass-producing food. Back then we didn\u2019t have access to the processing or\ntechnology that is used to make many of the processed foods we eat today. So\nthe focus is on whole foods, exactly the way they appear in nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The idea is that hunter-gatherers had lower\nrates of lifestyle diseases like obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and more.\nBetween eating only whole foods and leading a physically active lifestyle, it\u2019s\nhypothesized that we can go back to that way of eating in order to improve our\nhealth and avoid lifestyle diseases that are increasing at alarming rates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What do\nyou eat on the Paleo Diet?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When following the Paleo Diet, you will focus\non eating whole foods and avoiding processed foods. If it\u2019s not something that\nyou can either hunt or gather from nature, then it\u2019s not on the list of foods\nyou\u2019re allowed to eat on this diet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can eat:&nbsp;\nmeat, fish, eggs, vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, herbs, spices,\nhealthy fats, oils<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can drink: water (some still drink tea and\ncoffee as well)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You should avoid: all processed food, sugar,\nsoft drinks, grains, most dairy, legumes, artificial sweeteners, vegetable\noils, margarine, trans fats<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Who is\nthe Paleo Diet best for?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re looking for a diet that will promote\noverall better health, as well as weight loss, then it might be a good idea to\nlook at the Paleo Diet. Although most of the studies done have been very small\nsamples, there have been several studies that show that switching to a Paleo\ndiet can cause weight loss and improve a lot of things like cholesterol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2724493\/\">One study<\/a> looked at 13 people with type 2\ndiabetes who followed either a paleo diet or a typical diabetes diet for three\nmonths. The individuals that followed the Paleo diet lost 6.6lb more than those\non the typical diabetes diet and their HbA1c decreased by .4% when compared to\nthe diabetes diet group. Another study showed that after just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/ejcn20094\">10\ndays on the Paleo diet<\/a>, nine healthy people in the study saw\npositive effects on their health such as cholesterol down 16%, LDL (bad)\ncholesterol down 22%, and triglycerides down 35%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For your best chance at success on the Paleo\ndiet, follow the diet by focusing on whole foods, avoiding processed foods, and\nmoving your body daily the way our ancestors did. Making sure you have access\nto the right food and can easily avoid the wrong food (by not having it in your\nhome) will help you make the right choices in following the Paleo diet.
