Is it really that\nsimple? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Here are\nfour key steps to help you to develop a more positive mindset:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Keep a thought journal <\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have a negative internal dialogue constantly keeping\nyou down, you need to take action to banish these thoughts. If you have\ndifficulty identifying this negativity within your own mind, a simple first\naction can be keeping a thought journal. Write down a random sample of thoughts\nyou say in your own mind about yourself, events, people around you and other\nthings that happen throughout your day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Analyze these thoughts by reading the journal every night and\nestablishing your thought patterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do certain events trigger your negative thoughts? Take note\nof these and the next time you are faced with a similar triggering situation,\nthink more carefully about how you are approaching it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Banish negative self-talk<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>After keeping track of your thoughts for a week or two, you\nwill soon notice how consuming your negative thoughts potentially are. The next\nstep is to banish these all together. Next time you go to write down a negative\nthought in your thought journal, try to rephrase it so that it becomes a\nneutral statement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, \u201cBob forgot to take out the trash again so I had\nto do it and it ruined my evening\u201d could become \u201cBob forgot to take out the\ntrash. I did it.\u201d This is a small but effective way to train yourself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t just do this exercise on paper in your journal; begin\nto rephrase your negative thoughts into neutral ones in your mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>See the positive side<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It can be incredibly challenging for many people to jump\nstraight from negative thoughts into positive ones, which is why that\nneutral-thought stage is so crucial. By banishing negative self-talk, you are\nnow in a great position to genuinely see the positives, in different\nsituations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Refer back to your thought journal and particularly examine\nthe negative thoughts you have had. Putting aside all of the things you so\nobviously dislike about that thing, try to think of at least one positive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if you dislike your boss because they speak\nbadly to you, think about the way that you are actually developing more\nresilience and \u2018thicker skin\u2019 by being in that situation, which is a positive\nresult from a bad situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can be hard to find benefits within challenging\ncircumstances, but there is always a way to see something good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the Dalai Lama once famously said, \u201cSee the positive side,\nthe potential, and make an effort.\u201d Sometimes a lot of effort might be\nrequired, but it\u2019s worth it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Keep a gratitude journal<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A gratitude journal is an incredible way to take stock of all\nof the wonderful things around you. Every evening write down all of the things\nin your day, and life more generally, that you are grateful for. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps you are grateful to your friends for their support,\nfor the warm bed you are able to sleep in, or for the great weather you had that\nday. Write it all down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If someone gives you a compliment that you appreciated on any\nparticular day or said something very thoughtful, write it down in your\ngratitude journal too. Then when you find yourself being negative or critical,\nopen up the journal and read over all of the positive things in your life that\nmake you feel grateful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a sure-fire way to re-ground you, make you gain\nperspective and make you realize how insignificant that particular trigger may\nbe in the larger scheme of things.
