Not familiar with barberries?
How have barberries been used in other countries? It seems every other culture in the world has known about the benefits and pleasure of barberries but the US. There are many delicious recipes you can find using barberries. In other places in the world, barberries are the most widely used drug in homeopathic medicine for kidney pain and the removal of kidney stones. The ancient Egyptians used it with fennel seed to prevent plagues. In India, it was used to treat dysentery. European herbalists have used it to treat liver and gallbladder ailments. Russian healers used barberry for inflammation, high blood pressure and abnormal uterine bleeding. And the Iranians valued the plant for its anti-arrhythmic and sedative effects. Barberry has been touted for helping the urinary and digestive tracts, the skin and even the mind.
Where do they come from? Barberries are a common garden bush native to Europe, the British Isles and the Middle East. A close relative called the Oregon grape (B. aquifolium) is native to North America, and grows in the southern United States.
